DNA profiling

electrophoresis:

  • dna fragments form each person placed inside different wells, at anode end

  • electric current passed thru gel

  • dna fragments = negatively charged, so they move towards cathode

  • smaller fragments travel faster and move further

  • dna fragments are now separated

  • invisible binding pattern now shown

dna profiling:

  • obtain dna from individual

  • digest dna with restriction enzymes - results in fragments of different lengths

  • separate using gel electrophoresis

  • banding pattern is seen

  • compare to sample
