University Admissions Application Notes
Recommendations for Applying to University of Illinois
Apply for Two Majors
Reason: Majors are competitive; applying for a second major allows for a fallback option if the first choice cannot be accommodated.
Admission into the first choice major does not necessarily reflect qualifications; space availability is a significant factor.
Application Timing
Submit applications by January or November 1.
All majors at the University can be listed as first choice, except specific limited majors which must be designated as first.
If not interested in those specific majors, application can be less restrictive.
Application Methods
Applications can be submitted via the myYNI website or the Common App.
University is test-optional; submitting standardized test scores (ACT/SAT) is not a requirement but could enhance the application.
Holistic Review Process
The admissions team evaluates applicants on a holistic basis; GPA and test scores are just elements of review.
Not submitting test scores will not negatively impact the application.
Merit-Based Scholarships
The admissions application is the primary requirement for scholarship consideration.
Special Programs
Granger Engineering Pathways Program
Available for Illinois residents through a partnership with community colleges.
Guaranteed admissions to the Graduate College of Engineering after completing two years at a community college, with specific requirements for curriculum and testing (e.g., ALEKS placement test).
Course Recommendations
Always take math and science courses all four years of high school.
Recommended courses include:
Pre-calculus and higher
Lab sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Seek academically rigorous courses (AP, IB, honors, dual enrollment).
If rigorous courses are unavailable at a high school, this will not be held against the applicant.
Essay and Short Answer Insights
Essays play a crucial role; short answer questions matter more than the main essay.
Conduct research on majors, understanding curriculum, and relate it to personal experiences and ambitions.
Avoid generic stories; focus on current aspirations and relevant achievements in STEM fields and other activities.
Extracurricular Involvement
Join clubs and pursue interests outside of academics.
Aim to be an active community member; leadership roles add value to applications.
Discovering the Right Major
A major's relevance to a career outcome is not absolute; explore interdisciplinary options.
Utilize resources like the major's quiz to identify interests and align with appropriate fields.
Example: Systems Engineering and Design major offers a comprehensive computer science track; it may be less competitive compared to direct computer science.
Next Steps
Emotional and logistical preparation for the application process is essential.
Engage with campus tours and ask questions for clarification on any aspects of the application process.
