  • Athena, the goddess of wisdom, begged Zeus to allow Odysseus to go home.

  • Odysseus spent 7 years in the isle of the nymph Calypso, and Athena thinks that he has suffered enough.

  • Athena gave Telemachus a visit and told him to sail and look for his father.

  • He sailed with Athena who was disguised as an elder friend of his father, Mentor.

  • They arrived at Pylus and were welcomed by Nestor who informed them of Odysseus’ fate.

  • Telemchus travelled to sparta with Peisistratus, the son of Nestor

  • This is where he learned that Odysseus was imprisoned in Calypso’s isle.

  • Hermes was sent to Calypso isle to demand the liberation of Odysseus

  • Poseidon sees him escape and sends a storm

  • Athena and Leukothea help him swim to the Isle of Phaeaceans.

  • Important Details

  • The journey took 10 years. Including 10 years in troy so totally its 20 years.

  • Lotus Fruits made Odysseus’ men fall asleep and not care about going home. Odysseus had to drag them to the ship.

  • Polyphemus is a man-eating cyclops, he eats 2 of Odysseus’ men everyday. Odysseus defeats him by giving him wine and blinding him with a wooden stake.

  • Aeolus gave them hospitality in Aiolia for a month and provided west wind to carry them home.

  • The sailors opened it mistaking it for gold and got off course again.        

  • Laestrygonians are a cannibalistic tribe native to Telepylos.

  • Odysseus met Circe, a witch-goddess, in the island of Aeaea. He remained here with her for a year.

  • They summoned an old prophet named Tiresias in the underworld to advise them how to go home, in the Underworld

  • Scylla is a six-headed monster, and Charybdis is a giant whirlpool.

  • Thrinacia, also known as the island of the Sun

  • In the island of Ogygia, where Odysseus got washed up, he met Calypso a nymph, they became lovers for 7 years    

  • In the Land of the Phaecians, he met Nausicaa, daughter of the King Alcinus and Queen Arete of the Phaecians, wherein they escorted him to Ithaca.

  • He disguised himself as a beggar, his old maid Euraleia spots him, and then kills all the suitors except for one poet.
