Objectives
Neurodevelopment
Summarize how the nervous system develops:
discuss the stages in development from the neural plate to the mature CNS/PNS
Identify which parts of the developing nervous system correspond to specific structure in the adult
Discuss the time course of cellular development
identify the cell types found in the development
explain how the nervous system continues to mature after birth
Solve clinical scenarios for neurodevelopmental disorders
Blood Supply
Locate the blood vessels which supply the brain and trace the flow of blood
identifying vessels from the external and sagittal surface
draw and explain the function of the Circle of Willis
map each artery to the regions in the brain that it supplies
Locate and describe the venous sinus system
trace the flow of drainage to the jugular vein
Solve clinical scenarios for specific lesions of the cerebral vascular system based on signs and neuroimaging
Cranial Nerves
Locate the cranial nerves
classify based on function
trace the path of each nerve to or from its nuclei through the skull
identify nerves from the external surface of the brain
Solve clinical scenarios for lesions of the cranial nerves based on signs and neuroimaging
identify syndrome based on associated cranial nerve
distinguish between lesion in PNS and CNS
distinguish between UMN and LMN for CN VII and XII
Brainstem
Describe the functional neuroanatomy of the brainstem
identify surface features for brainstem: dorsal and ventral views
locate landmarks (including nuclei) within each cross-section of the medulla, pons, and brainstem
trace the path and decussation of each cortical and spinal tract through the brainstem
Solve clinical scenarios and identify syndromes for lesions of brainstem based on signs and neuroimaging
