Objectives

Neurodevelopment

  • Summarize how the nervous system develops:

    • discuss the stages in development from the neural plate to the mature CNS/PNS

    • Identify which parts of the developing nervous system correspond to specific structure in the adult

  • Discuss the time course of cellular development

    • identify the cell types found in the development

    • explain how the nervous system continues to mature after birth

  • Solve clinical scenarios for neurodevelopmental disorders

Blood Supply

  • Locate the blood vessels which supply the brain and trace the flow of blood

    • identifying vessels from the external and sagittal surface

    • draw and explain the function of the Circle of Willis

    • map each artery to the regions in the brain that it supplies

  • Locate and describe the venous sinus system

    • trace the flow of drainage to the jugular vein

  • Solve clinical scenarios for specific lesions of the cerebral vascular system based on signs and neuroimaging

Cranial Nerves

  • Locate the cranial nerves

    • classify based on function

    • trace the path of each nerve to or from its nuclei through the skull

    • identify nerves from the external surface of the brain

  • Solve clinical scenarios for lesions of the cranial nerves based on signs and neuroimaging

    • identify syndrome based on associated cranial nerve

    • distinguish between lesion in PNS and CNS

    • distinguish between UMN and LMN for CN VII and XII

Brainstem

  • Describe the functional neuroanatomy of the brainstem

    • identify surface features for brainstem: dorsal and ventral views

    • locate landmarks (including nuclei) within each cross-section of the medulla, pons, and brainstem

    • trace the path and decussation of each cortical and spinal tract through the brainstem

  • Solve clinical scenarios and identify syndromes for lesions of brainstem based on signs and neuroimaging
