Polar Bonds

  • polar covalent bond = when atoms of two different elements form a bond with unequal sharing of electrons

  • unequal sharing results from difference in electronegativity of two atoms

  • greater EN, greater attraction of electrons

  • exhibit some ionic character, partial charges on atoms in the bond

  • 0-0.5= non polar

  • 0.5-1.7=polar

  • 1.7-3.96=ionic
