What are clinical and counseling psychology?

Who are we helping?

  • Patients (mental illness, transitional challenges etc.)

Psychology: Study of the brain and behavior

Variable career roles: may vary simultaneously or sequentially

relationship.

Assessment: Do a survey to see how the patient has been doing since the last they saw each other.

Treatment: Set up consultation with psychiatrist to talk about medicine or help client set up coping mechanisms. Individual therapy, group therapy etc.

Research: working with student to research a topic within psychology.

Teaching: working with student to teach about whatever topic the student is interested in.

Psychology as a field was born in Europe, grew up in the United States – largely due to American values

Academic psychology combined with the social forces of the early 1900s and clinical psychology was born

1st psychological clinic was established in 1896 by lighter Whitmer at the university of Pennsylvania

  • Served children

Journal of Abnormal Psychology began in 1907

Assessment grew rapidly in Europe and the U.S. and took center stage due to WWI

1949 APA Conference

  • Was in boulder CO
  • Determined that a doctorate degree was necessary for clinical psychologists
  • Created the boulder model (aka the scientist practitioner model)

Late 1800s, was born of a vocational movement due to increase in need for skilled works (industrialization)

Frank parsons credited for the Vocational Guidance Movement

WWII (1939-1945) helped moved counseling into more therapeutic practices as well as career related.

  • Carl rogers wrote counseling and psychotherapy in 1942
    • Was one of the founding fathers of Humanistic Psychology

The Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17) was recognized by the APA in 1946
