Recap

  • Sex: Biologically constructed

  • Gender: Socially constructed

  • Sexuality: Socio-politically constructed

  • These categories are often presented as binary occurrences.

  • Bodies that do not fit this binary criteria are often "othered" and deemed "rare".

Gendering Sex

  • Process Initiation: Gendering begins before birth through biology.

    • Example: Gender reveal parties/baby showers.

  • At birth, children are symbolically placed into one of two genders.

  • Question for Reflection: In what other ways are sexed bodies gendered before children can talk?

Gender at School

  • Cultural Reference: Always “Like a Girl.”

  • At school, children are further socialized into two categories of gender.

  • Discussion Point: What other ways are children socialized into gender?

  • These gender rules are punishable if not adhered to.
