A team can debate FOR or AGAINST a topic

FOR = AFFIRMATIVE/GOVERNMENT

AGAINST = NEGATIVE/OPPOSITION

Resolutions include an actor and an action

4 step method for rebuttal -

1. “The government stated that…”

2. ”However this is not important/untrue/irrelevant.”

3. Explain why (because)

4. Therefore…

A plan or model is made by a Government team:

- What

- How

- Who

- When

- Why

- Sanctions (What will happen if this plan does not happen?)

- Impacts and benefits.

Proper lingo:

Say “Thank you Mr.Speaker.” Before speech

“For these reasons, the resolution must and will stand/fall. End of speech

Defining terms:

- “We define the house as ___” (EX:Hgs Playground)

- BIRT : Be it resolve that . . .

- THBT : This house believes that . . .

- THW : This house would . . .

- THR : This house regrets . . .

- THS : This house supports . . .

REBUTTAL/REFUTE : Arguing against what the other team has said

ARGUMENT : Making an argument that ____ (EX. Cats are better than dogs.)

3. Members of a PANEL debate -

- 2 Teams

Government

Leader :

-2 arguments

-Speaks first.

-2-3 min speech

-Introduces the teams point

-Argues for the topic.

Deputy leader :

-2 min speech.

-1 argument

-Speaks second.

-Can attack the opposite leader.

Members 1-3 :

-Ask questions.

-30 secs to ask and respond.

- Anyone can answer a question, but only members can ask.

Party Whip :

-Speaks last

-2 min

-2 min break -Sums up all arguments from both sides.

-Says why their side has stronger arguments and should win.

-No new arguments should be added.

Opposition

Leader :

-2 arguments

-Speaks first.

-2-3 min speech

-Introduces team’s point

-Argues against the topic.

-2 min speech.

-1 main argument

-Speaks second.

-Can attack the opposite leader

Members 1-3 :
