Test 2/5/25 nervous system A&P

The nervous system is split into two CNS and PNS

CNS- The brain and spinal chord

PNS- is also split into two autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system

Autonomic Nervous System- Communicates with internal organs and glands., Split up into two the Sympathetic division and parasympathetic

Sympathetic- Arousing. Fight or flight

Parasympathetic- calming. Vagal nerve

Somatic nervous system- sensory and motor

sensory- (afferent) sensory input

Motor- (efferent) motor output

Fight or flight- an autonomic physical reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. It triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body to fight or flee!

Integration- an act of brining together smaller components into a single system that functions as one.

astrocyte- a typical SNS support cell. Assists in exchanges between blood capillaries and neurons

Oligodendrocyte- a type of CNS support cell that composes the myelin sheath

Myelin sheath- insulation around the nerve, protective layer of lipids and proteins

Glial cells- supportimg cells

Myelin sheath to → oligodendrocytes → CNS →schwann cells →PNS

Saltatory conduction nerve impulses/ message “skip” across the neuron’s membrane

Neurons are highluy specialized cells that soend their whole life (24-7) carrying or waiting to carry a message.

Neurons are so dedicated to their job that they do not spend any energy reprodrucing themselves after the age of 2. theyre in what is known as permanent go or growth arrested. this means that the neuron will not go through mitosis. if this neuron dies others sometimes can be traibned to carry that message along another pathway.
