Units of Measurement in Radiation Protection

- Absorbed Dose:
- Definition: Quantifies the amount of energy deposited by radiation in matter; used specifically to express patient dose.
- Unit of Measurement: Expressed in grays (Gy).
- Dose Equivalent:
- Definition: Used to express exposure received by occupational radiation workers, accounting for biological impact.
- Unit of Measurement: Expressed in sieverts (Sv).
- Radioactivity:
- Definition: Represents the rate at which unstable radionuclides undergo decay over time.

Exposure Standards and Regulatory Oversight

- Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC):

- Principle governing all individual radiation exposures ordered by physicians during radiographic procedures.
- Requirement: The expected diagnostic or therapeutic benefit to the patient must outweigh the potential risk of biological damage.
Recommended Radiation Dose Limits
- Occupational Dose Limits (Radiation Workers):
- Annual Limit: 50mSv
- Cumulative Limit: Calculated using the formula 10mSv×age (where age is expressed in years)
- Public Exposure Dose Limits (Annual):
- Frequent Exposure Limit: 1mSv
- Infrequent Exposure Limit: 5mSv (applies to normal public/background exposure contexts)
- Pregnant Radiation Workers:
- Monthly Exposure Limit: 0.5mSv per month throughout pregnancy
- Gestational Exposure Limit: 5mSv total across the entire gestation period
- Voluntary Declaration: The official declaration of pregnancy by a radiation worker is entirely voluntary.
Biological Effects of Radiation and Acute Radiation Syndrome

- Somatic Effects: Radiation-induced damage that develops directly in the exposed individual over time. Key examples include cataracts and carcinogenesis.
- Genetic Effects: Radiation damage passed to future generations resulting from germ cell exposure. Key example includes genetic mutations.
Patient Protection and Radiation Dosimetry
- ALARA Principle:
- Acronym for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable," representing the foundational concept of radiation protection aimed at minimizing exposure.
- Patient Shielding Guidelines:
- Gonadal and fetal shielding practice is being discontinued due to updated risk versus benefit evaluations.
- Dosimetry Technologies:
