The globe is split up into lines of latitude and longitude

Latitude is centred at the equator
The equator divides the globe into northern and southern hemispheres.
Lines are horizontal and span from 90 degrees north (at the north pole) to 90 degrees south (at the south pole)

Longitude is centred at the prime meridian
This passes through Greenwich in London
It divides the globe into eastern and western hemispheres
The lines are vertical and span 180 degrees east and west
They meet up at the antimeridian.

Degrees can be divided into minutes and seconds for more precision.
