The globe is split up into lines of latitude and longitude

Latitude

  • Latitude is centred at the equator

  • The equator divides the globe into northern and southern hemispheres.

  • Lines are horizontal and span from 90 degrees north (at the north pole) to 90 degrees south (at the south pole)

Longitude

  • Longitude is centred at the prime meridian

    • This passes through Greenwich in London

    • It divides the globe into eastern and western hemispheres

  • The lines are vertical and span 180 degrees east and west

  • They meet up at the antimeridian.

Degrees and Minutes 🧭

  • Degrees can be divided into minutes and seconds for more precision.
