Learning Objectives:
Ionic nomenclature
Writing Binary Formulas
Naming Binary Compounds
Naming Non-Binary Compounds
Naming Ionic Compounds
Writing Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds are formed by combining a metal with a non-metal like:
CaO
FeCL3
CusN2
metals lose electrons to become positive ions, non-metals gain eectrons ti becime negative ions
when an ionic bond is formed, the charge must be balanced
practice questions:
how are ionic compounds form?
how were ionic compounds discovered?
what are ionnic bonds? how are they formed?
Steps to Naming Binary Compounds
Write the name of the metal first
Add the Roman Numeral of the metal’s charge after the metal (ONLY IF: the metal has 2 different charges)
Change the ending of the non-metal into -ide
Examples:
Na3P → Sodium Phosphide
VF5 → Vanadium (V) Fluoride
Cu3N2 → Copper (II) Nitride
