Pillar 3: Fluency

Outline of Reading Fluency

Definition of Fluency

  • The ability to read text orally with accuracy and speed (rate).

  • Involves grouping words into meaningful phrases, reading with prosody, intonation, and stress.

Difference Between Automaticity and Fluency

  • Automaticity: Fast, effortless word recognition, developed through consistent reading practice.

  • Fluency: Requires automaticity and involves reading with expression (prosodic features like rhythm, pitch, intonation).

Skills that Facilitate Reading Fluency

  • Knowledge of common morphological endings (e.g., -ed, -ing, -s).

  • Familiarity with word families and/or word neighborhoods.

  • Ability to detect orthographic patterns.

Key Point
