Environmental Science: An Overview1.11.1 What Is Environmental Science?

  • Environmental science is an interdisciplinary subject that integrates principles from various fields, including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, ecology, oceanography, climatology, social sciences, economics, political science, and ethics. This broad scope allows for a holistic understanding of environmental issues.

  • It addresses persistent and complex challenges facing humanity and the planet, examining both the causes and potential solutions for critical areas such as rapid population growth, accelerating climate change, various forms of pollution (air, water, soil), depletion of natural resources, and significant biodiversity losses.

  • Ecological footprints are a key analytical tool used to quantitatively estimate human impacts on the environment. They measure the amount of biologically productive land and sea area required to produce the resources an individual, population, or activity consumes, and to absorb the waste generated, providing a tangible way to assess sustainability.


The Two Worlds of Human Existence

Humans have always navigated two fundamental worlds:

  • The natural world: This encompasses all components not created by human effort, including plants, animals, microorganisms, soils, geological formations, the atmosphere, and hydrological systems. It operates under natural laws and cycles, having preceded human existence by billions of years. Humans are an inherent, though often impactful, part of this complex, self-regulating system.

  • The social world: This is entirely constructed by humans through collective actions and thought. It includes social institutions (e.g., legal systems, educational bodies), artifacts (e.g., infrastructure, technology), scientific discoveries, technological advancements, cultural norms, and political organizations (e.g., governments, international agreements). This world shapes our perceptions, values, and interactions with the natural environment.

Enduring Tensions and Opportunities

  • While both worlds are undeniably essential for human well-being, their interactions often create significant tensions. Humanity's increasing power to extract, process, and consume vast quantities of natural resources, coupled with the production of unprecedented amounts of waste and direct modification of ecosystems, now profoundly threatens both our own long-term survival and the existence of countless other species.

  • Conversely, humanity also possesses unprecedented access to new scientific ideas, highly efficient technologies (such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and advanced waste treatment), and unique opportunities for global cooperation. These tools provide the means to develop and implement sustainable strategies aimed at mitigating environmental degradation and fostering ecological recovery.

  • A core objective of environmental science is to comprehensively understand how our natural and social worlds function independently and interactively. This understanding allows us to accurately assess the magnitude of our impact, and identify effective, actionable strategies to protect and improve the environment for both present and future generations, promoting intergenerational equity and ecological integrity.

Defining "Environment" and "Environmental Science"
  • Environment: Derived from the French word environner (meaning "to encircle or surround"), the term is broadly defined in two primary ways:

    1. The aggregate of surrounding circumstances or conditions that encircle or affect an organism or group of organisms, including both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components such as climate, soil, water, and other species.

    2. The complex social, cultural, and political conditions, along with economic and technological factors, that influence an individual or community, shaping human activities and their environmental consequences.

  • Because humans exist within both the natural world and the social world, environmental science is precisely defined as the systematic study of these intricate interactions between human societies and the natural environment. It aims to identify, understand, and solve environmental problems, and to predict and prevent future ones, fostering a more sustainable relationship between humanity and the planet.
