What is Analytic Cubism and what are its two major sources? How is Synthetic Cubism different?

Analytic cubism: fractured geometric shapes floating above canvas - colorless, simplified forms

• Sources: Cezanne (POV shit/mult angles) and African masks (flattening 3D face to 2D forms, powerful & expressive)

Synthetic cubism: engaging, playful color, clear forms

How does Picasso’s Death of Marat compare to Munch’s or David’s?

• Picasso: vibrant colors, sharp outlines, decorative blood, forms representing vagina/pp

• Munch: dark colors, blurred edges and forms, focus on woman and murder

• David: rich, dark colors, deep realism and raw emotion, idealized naturalism scene
