Taboo

Great! Taboo is a fantastic vocabulary and speaking game, and it works very well for A2 to B1 English learners. Here's a simple guide on how to play Taboo at this level, adapted for language learners:

🎲 What Is Taboo?

Taboo is a word-guessing game where players describe a word without using certain "taboo" words. The goal is to help your team guess the main word as quickly as possible.

📚 Materials Needed

  • Taboo cards (can be printed or written—I'll include a sample set below!)

  • Timer (1 minute)

  • A group (2+ players, ideally in teams)

Using 6 cards- divide into two teams, give a point for each team that gets there first, 1-1.30 minutes each round. Tell them I will get sweets at lunchtime tomorrow for winning team, buy sweets so that everyone gets one but winners get extra, (thursday)

🧠 How to Play (Simplified Rules for A2–B1 Levels)

  1. Prepare Cards: Each card has:

    • Main word (the one to guess)

    • Taboo words (3–5 simple words you cannot say)

  2. Form Teams: Divide into 2 or more teams.

  3. Describe:

    • One player from Team A picks a card.

    • That player has 1 minute to describe the main word without using any taboo words.

    • Their team tries to guess the word.

  4. If They Guess Right:

    • The team gets 1 point.

    • Move to the next card (if time allows).

  5. If They Say a Taboo Word:

    • That card is skipped, and no point is given.

  6. Rotate Teams:

    • After time is up, it's the next team's turn.

  7. Winning:

    • The team with the most points after all cards or rounds wins.
