Study Notes on the Sun and Solar System
The Sun and the Solar System
The Sun
- A massive center of our solar system.
- Located approximately one astronomical unit (AU) away from Earth.
- Plays a vital role in sustaining life on Earth by providing heat and light.
Order of the Planets
- The planets of the solar system, in order from the Sun:
- Mercury
- Venus
- Earth
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
- Uranus
- Neptune
- Mnemonic Device: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos" helps remember the order of the planets.
Types of Celestial Bodies
Meteoroids
- Definition: A small rock or particle from space before it enters Earth's atmosphere.
Meteors
- Definition: A meteoroid that burns up upon entering Earth's atmosphere, often visible as a shooting star.
Asteroids
- Definition: A small rocky object that orbits the Sun, primarily found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Inner Planets
- Also referred to as terrestrial planets.
- Characteristics: Rocky composition and closer proximity to the Sun.
Moons
- Definition: Objects in space that orbit a planet.
Outer Planets
- Defined as gas giants due to their large sizes and gaseous compositions.
- Farther from the Sun than the inner planets.
Regions of the Solar System
Kuiper Belt
- A region located beyond Neptune that contains many small icy bodies.
- Includes dwarf planets, such as Pluto.
Oort Cloud
- A distant spherical shell of icy objects surrounding the solar system, far beyond the Kuiper Belt.
Comets
- Comet
- Defined as a space object made of ice, dust, and rock that orbits the Sun.
- Comets typically have long, elliptical orbits.
