9.2 Contact with the law

The law is there to protect your rights and outline your responsibilities.

Legal Capacity - Legal capacity is the ability of a person to do something

Minor - Under 18 years of age

Adult - Aged 18 years or over

Minimum Age Requirements

Get a full time job - 16/17 years old

  • You must be 17 years of age and have completed year 10. You can begin work before    the age of 16 if you seek an exception to leave school and have a job ready.

Get a tattoo - 18 years old

  • If you are under the age of 18, you need your parents/guardians permission in writing,    which gives details about the size, content and location of the tattoo on your body.

Open a snap chat account - 13 years old

  • Must be 13 years old or older.

Move out of home - No law

  • There is no law that stops you from moving out before turning 18, however your needs  parents/guardians permission and a safe place to go to.

Drink alcohol - 18 years old

  • Must be 18 to purchase alcohol from restaurants or stores.

Leave School - 17 years old

  • Can leave school earlier if you have a full time job, attend TAFE or are being homeschooled.

Case Study - Bicycles and the law

A bicycle is considered a vehicle, meaning the cyclist must obey road rules.
