Comprehensive Notes on Clinical Rotations, Simulations, Skills Labs, and Practicums

Professionalism and Grading

  • Professionalism is graded on the same scale as clinical lab and sim time.
  • Points are awarded based on participation, writing, and meeting expectations.
  • Grading details are available on Canvas.
  • Professional development expectations align with competencies.

Course Breakdown

  • 35% of the grade is based on clinical assignments (weekly).
  • The remaining portion comes from skills and learning activities like simulations.
  • A minimum of 80% is required to pass the course.

Course Contacts

  • Clinical questions/concerns: Contact the instructor via email or in the hall office.
  • Simulation-related questions: Contact the simulation instructor.
  • Skills lab/skills day/pass-off questions: Contact Natasha.
  • Practicum-related questions: Contact Nikki.
  • For general inquiries, email the instructor.

Clinical Information

  • Seven clinical rotations this semester at various facilities.
  • Shifts are 12 hours long.
  • Clinical Orientation: Details will be provided separately.
  • Punctuality is mandatory.
  • If you anticipate missing clinical, simulation, or lab time, notify instructors ASAP for potential make-up hours.
  • All hours of skills lab, simulation, and clinical are mandatory.
  • In case of weather-related cancellations, instructors will notify you. Otherwise, proceed to the hospital. Failure to attend without notification results in a zero for professionalism and requires making up the entire shift.
  • Inform instructors of any special precautions (e.g., latex allergy, pregnancy) for appropriate accommodations.
  • Report any injuries at clinical to the clinical instructor immediately to ensure proper handling and policy adherence.
  • Clinical evaluations occur at midterm and final, graded on a scale of satisfactory, developing, or needs improvement.
  • Instructors will discuss midterm evaluations with students.
  • Self-evaluations are completed at midterm and after the final.
  • To pass the course, the final clinical evaluation must show developing or satisfactory in every category. "Needs improvement" in any category results in course failure.
  • Instructors aim to address concerns and help students improve during clinical rotations.
  • Read all directions and rubrics in Canvas for due dates and requirements.

Clinical Paperwork

  • Complete all required clinical paperwork by the due date.
  • Failure to complete paperwork may prevent the entire cohort from attending clinicals at certain hospitals.
  • The clinical forms assignment outlines required tasks for each facility.
  • Lakeview and Arvo Regional require an employment verification form (Step 2) to be completed and uploaded to Canvas.
  • The employment verification form requires a work history of the last ten years or since the age of 18, including job titles and approximate salary ranges.
  • One can check the enrollment suite portal to verify completion status. "Complete, nothing to do" indicates that the requirements are met.
  • Updates will be provided, and instructors will add scores in the Gradebook.

Simulation Information

  • Four simulations are scheduled during the semester in place of clinicals.
  • Intro Simulation: Introduces the sim lab and its mannequins with realistic body sounds.
  • Baseline Simulation: Involves assessments on live patients prior to clinical experiences.
  • OB Simulation: Provides OB experience for all students, including those at hospitals without OB units.
  • Safety Simulation: Low-stress simulation with a scavenger hunt format focused on safety protocols.
  • Each simulation has a pre-assignment (approximately 20 minutes) to prepare students for the simulation content.
  • Simulations involve role-playing scenarios where students act as nurses, assess patients, and communicate with physicians using SBAR.
  • Debriefing sessions follow each scenario to discuss strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Post-simulation assignments include reflective journals to identify strong areas, areas for improvement, and knowledge gains.
  • Simulation feedback is collected to improve future simulations.

Skills Lab and Pass-Offs

  • The first skills lab is integrated into the regular classroom setting.
  • Clean skills like enemas, ostomy care, NG tube insertion, and feeding will be taught.
  • Students will be well-prepared for skills lab pass-offs through practice and confidence-building activities.
  • Resources are available in the nursing office for additional practice.
  • Each pass-off is worth 3% of the grade.
  • Simulate skills on a real patient, including proper patient identification and glove usage.
  • Smartwatches are not allowed during pass-offs to prevent referencing rubrics.
  • Pass-offs contribute 15% to the overall grade.
  • Each pass-off is paired with a quiz to assess knowledge. Quizzes now include what was previously said in the past off.
  • The knowledge-based component is separated from the demonstration, aiding in knowledge assessment.
  • Study guides are provided for each quiz.
  • If a score is below 80%, a remediation quiz is required, though it will not improve the original score.

Practicums

  • Practicums provide a dress rehearsal for skills, allowing students to practice with a partner.
  • Uniforms are not required for practicums.
  • The practicum allows students to prepare for skills with their partner.
  • Students alternate roles, with one demonstrating the skill and the other providing feedback using a rubric.
  • The effectiveness of the practicum depends on thorough coaching from the partner, including correcting mistakes and ensuring proper technique.

General Reminders

  • Plenty of communication and scheduling will occur via calendars.
  • Students are encouraged to ask questions for clarification.
  • Instructors are available to address concerns and offer support.
  • Employment verification must be turned into a clinical work assignment.
