digestion and examples
protein: digested in stomach and duodenum by protease enzyme. breaks peptide bonds between plypeptide chains to form amino acids whcih are absorbed in the jejunum.
examples:
Chicken meal
Soya bean meal
Fish meal
Dried egg
Sunflower meal
Starch and sugar: starch - storage polysaccharide. 4+ monosaccharides joined together. sugar - mono or disaccharide. Digestion starts in mouth with amylase in saliva. digestion halted in stomach due to low pH (1-2). digestion continues in duodenum by amylase which breaks down polysaccharides into smaller chains and monosaccharides which are then absorbed in the jejunum as monosaccharides.
examples:
Micronised maize
Oats
Barley
Wheat
Micronised peas
Fats/oils: digestion begins in duodenum by lipase enzyme. Fats are also emulsified by bile produced by the liver and released from the gall bladder where it’s stored. This increased the surface area for faster digestion.
Examples:
Fibre: structural polysaccharide. Present in plants with high lignin content. Digestion occurs in
into volatile fatty acids (butyric, propionic, acetic) which are absorbed in the large intestine
Examples:
Alfalfa chaff
Oat straw
Oat feed pellets
Alfalfa pellets
Sugar beet
Soya bean hulls
