Observer Historical Front Pages

Newspaper 1 - 30th October 1966

Main image:

The image of the Queen is the largest image because people at the time were very interested in the monarchy. As well as this, its dominance implies the significance of it. The Queen is an important figure who is a symbol of the British identity. The image catches the eye of a reader when buying the newspaper.

The image reflects the fact that Britain was sophisticated and patriotic at that time.

Cultural Contexts:

Quality:

The printing quality is low when taking the standard quality in modern society into consideration.

It is in black and white, which shows how far technology has advanced since 1966. As well as this, the phrase ‘IN COLOUR’ written in all capital letters, shows the rarity of coloured images, and the fact that it could be a unique selling point of a product at that time.

Articles:

  • Related to the present time - the Cold War and other atrocities.

  • Heavily focused on the monarchy as most were royalist - the image of the Queen is the largest.

  • Shows traditional values - contrasting 2023

  • Focused on more hard news stories rather than lifestyle, entertainment or celebrity gossip

In 2023:

  • Articles will be majorly about celebrity gossip

  • Newspapers will have a political ideology

  • A wide range of stories for every audience

  • Some people read articles for entertainment

  • Focused on more soft news stories rather than what is going on in the world around us

Political Contexts:

  • The headlines reflect a lack of political ideology as they are all just reporting the news rather than altering it to dramatise it.

  • Celebrity culture isn’t as big as it is today as none of the headlines are dedicated to any.

  • The headlines are mostly related to the Cold War and spies, and show how dominant this topic was at that time.

Social Contexts:

Women are largely underrepresented on the page and most headlines link to male leaders which reflects the patriarchal society. However, the size of the Queen’s image contrasts this and reflects her importance.

Newspaper 2 - 6th November 1966

Not much had changed in the week.

Social Contexts:

The main headline about a change in law making it easier for people to divorce reflects the evolution of peoples views, and how they were becoming less traditional. It also reflects a rise in equality as women often were forced to stay in abusive marriages/unhappy marriages forced to stay together. Society was taking small steps towards gender equality in a patriarchal society.

  • It used to be illegal to divorce

  • People were forced to get married

However:

Women are still largely underrepresented on the front page - apart from a lingerie advert which sexualises women - and most headlines link to male leaders which reflects the patriarchal society.

Advert also shows that women are now working, and therefore have disposable income, which shows the gradual road to society becoming what it is today - where women working is normalised.

Political Contexts:

  • Headline about a clash between the Prime Minister (Harold Wilson) and one of his ministers over joining the EU - similar to how politics and relationships with Europe are controversial today.

  • Headlines reflect the dominance of spying news stories, showing how important the topic of the Cold War was at that time.

Cultural Contexts:

  • Articles are focused more on hard news stories rather than lifestyle, entertainment or celebrity gossip.

Newspaper 3 - 20th October 1968

Social Contexts:

Barbara Castle is the only female politician mentioned on the page as she is trying to argue for equal pay - which was unheard of at the time. This reflects the small steps taken towards gender equality but also demonstrates the patriarchal society of the time (as it was generally accepted that women were paid less than men).

The article references an interracial relationship which suggests that it was a big deal at the time. It reflects the racism still in society at the time.
