Plant Cell Structure and Functions
Key Learning Objectives
Label a diagram of a plant cell accurately.
Describe the functions of the individual structures and organelles within a plant cell.
Overview of Plant Cells and Microscopic Features
Energy Utilization: Unlike animal cells, plant cells can capture and use light energy to carry out photosynthesis.
Cellular Classification: Plants are classified as eukaryotes, meaning their cells contain a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Morphology: Under a microscope, plant cells display a distinct, regular shape. This contrasts with animal cells, which can easily alter their shape.
Internal Appearance: Microscopic examination shows that plant cells are densely packed with green internal structures.
Shared Structures with Animal Cells
Plant cells contain several internal structures that are identical in form and function to those found in animal cells:
Nucleus: Contains the cell's genetic material.
Cytoplasm: The fluid environment where chemical reactions take place inside the cell.
Cell Membrane: A selective barrier that controls which molecules enter and leave the cell.
Mitochondria: Organelles that carry out aerobic respiration to release energy for the cell.
Ribosomes: Microscopic cellular structures that act as the site of protein synthesis.
Unique Plant Cell Structures
Plant cells possess three specific structures that animal cells lack entirely:
Chloroplasts:
Densely packed green structures contained within the cytoplasm.
Contain the green pigment chlorophyll.
Serve as the exact sites where photosynthesis takes place.
Cell Wall:
Surrounds the outer boundary of the plant cell.
Constructed from a specialized chemical compound called cellulose.
Strengthens and reinforces the structural integrity of the cell.
Present in plants as well as algae, which are very simple forms of plant life that also contain a cellulose cell wall.
Large Permanent Vacuole:
An internal storage structure within the cell.
Completely filled with a fluid called cell sap.
Helps maintain and give the plant cell its structural shape because it is packed full of fluid.
