MX 2pm

Supplementary Details of the Maxillary Second Premolar (2nd PM)

General Characteristics

  • Serves as a supplement to the maxillary first premolar (1st PM) in function.
  • Closely resembles the 1st PM in structure, albeit with some variations in appearance.
  • The crown exhibits a less angular design, providing a more rounded effect, leading to variations in size.
  • The root length typically exceeds that of the 1st PM.
  • Overall dimensions are slightly smaller compared to the 1st PM.

Buccal Aspect

  • Root Structure: Characterized by a single root.
  • Cusp Characteristics:
    • Buccal cusp is shorter and less pointed than that of the 1st PM.
    • The mesial slope of the buccal cusp ridge is shorter than the distal slope.
  • Crown and Root Thickness: Both the crown and root are thicker at the cervical portions.
  • Buccal Ridge: The buccal ridge of the crown may not be as prominent as seen in the 1st PM.

Lingual Aspect

  • Cusp Variation:
    • Minimal variation from the 1st PM, except for the lingual cusp which is longer, thus making the crown appear longer on the lingual side.

Proximal Aspect

  • Cusp Height: The cusps of the 2nd PM are generally shorter in height.
  • Cusp Length Equality: The buccal and lingual cusps are nearly equal in length.
  • Cusp Separation: Notable greater distance between cusp tips than in the 1st PM.
  • Developmental Grooves:
    • No developmental depression present on the mesial aspect.
    • The crown surface is observed to be convex.
    • A shallow developmental groove appears on the single tapered root.
    • Distal developmental depression is deeper when compared to the mesial depression found on the maxillary first premolar.
  • Distal Aspect Variation: No significant variation is observed in the distal view of the tooth.

Occlusal Aspect

  • Crown Outline: The outline of the crown is more rounded or oval-shaped, contrasting from the more angular outline of the 1st PM.
  • Central Developmental Groove: The central developmental groove is shorter and exhibits a more irregular shape.
  • Supplementary Grooves: There is a tendency for multiple supplementary grooves to appear.
  • Occlusal Surface: The irregularity of the occlusal surface leads to a very wrinkled appearance.
