Types of Neuron Reflex Arcs

  • There are two types of neuron reflex arcs:
    • Simple Reflex Arc:
    • Characteristics:
      • Does not include an interneuron.
      • Composed of a single nerve impulse pathway involving one afferent neuron (sensory neuron) and one efferent neuron (motor neuron).
      • Example: Patellar (Knee Jerk) Reflex.
      • Process:
      1. Tapping the patellar tendon stimulates it.
      2. The stimulated tendon sends a signal back to the anterior thigh muscles (quadriceps femoris).
      3. The muscle spindles in the rectus femoris muscle contract, leading to knee extension.
    • Withdrawal Reflex (Three Neuron Reflex Arc):
    • Characteristics:
      • Includes an interneuron present in the gray matter of the spinal cord.
      • Involves three neurons (1 sensory, 1 interneuron, 1 motor).
      • Example: Withdraw from a pinprick or heat (e.g., removing a hand from a hot stove).
      • Process:
      1. Stimulus detected by a receptor.
      2. Signal transmitted through sensory neuron to the interneuron.
      3. Interneuron processes information and sends a signal via a motor neuron to the effector (muscle).
      4. Effector muscle contracts, leading to withdrawal of affected body part.

Brain Anatomy Overview

  • The brain consists of multiple structures:
    • Cerebral Hemispheres (Right & Left):
    • Have various functions based on their lobes.
    • Diencephalon:
    • Contains three parts:
      • Epithalamus (includes pineal gland).
      • Thalamus (relay sensory information to cortex, also involved in memory).
      • Hypothalamus (integrates autonomic nervous system functions, regulates body functions).
    • Brain Stem:
    • Composed of midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
    • Functions include relaying sensory and motor pathways, controlling respiration, and vital reflex functions.
    • Cerebellum:
    • Responsible for balance and coordination (e.g., field sobriety tests).

Lobes of the Brain

  • Frontal Lobe: Involved in decision making, problem solving, and motor function.
  • Parietal Lobe: Processes sensory information that includes taste, temperature, and touch.
  • Temporal Lobe: Associated with auditory information and memory; involved in smell sensation.
  • Occipital Lobe: Central to visual processing, where visual input is interpreted.
  • Insula: Deep within the brain; associated with taste sensation.

Brain Structure Terms

  • Gyrus: Elevated ridges in the brain.
  • Sulcus: Shallow grooves separating gyri.
  • Fissure: Deep grooves dividing larger brain areas.
  • Central Sulcus: Separates frontal lobe from parietal lobe, containing the precentral gyrus (motor area) and postcentral gyrus (sensory area).

Neuroanatomy of the Brain

  • Precentral Gyrus: Motor function (controls voluntary movements).
  • Postcentral Gyrus: Sensory function (receives sensory input).
  • Lateral Sulcus: Separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe and temporal lobes.

Cranial Nerves Overview

  1. Olfactory Nerve (Cranial Nerve I): Sense of smell.
  2. Optic Nerve (Cranial Nerve II): Vision.
  3. Oculomotor Nerve (Cranial Nerve III): Eye movement, pupil constriction.
  4. Trochlear Nerve (Cranial Nerve IV): Eye movement via superior oblique muscle.
  5. Trigeminal Nerve (Cranial Nerve V): Sensation to the face, motor control for chewing.
  6. Abducens Nerve (Cranial Nerve VI): Eye movement via lateral rectus muscle.
  7. Facial Nerve (Cranial Nerve VII): Muscles of facial expression, taste to anterior tongue.

  12. Hypoglossal Nerve (Cranial Nerve XII): Tongue movement.

Meninges

  • The protective layers covering the brain and spinal cord:
    • Dura Mater: Tough outer layer.
    • Arachnoid Mater: Middle layer, resembling spider web.
    • Pia Mater: Delicate inner layer closely adhering to the brain.

Meningitis

  • Inflammation of the meninges caused by infections (viral or bacterial).
  • Symptoms include severe headache, stiff neck, lethargy, and fever.
  • Diagnosis often involves testing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) withdrawn via lumbar puncture.
