Follicle and Egg Development
Follicle Definition: A follicle consists of supportive cells surrounding an egg cell, essential for its development.
Stages of Follicle Development:
- Initial Stage: Primitive egg cell (primary oocyte) surrounded by a few supportive cells.
- Development Phase: As the egg matures, more layers of cells accumulate around it.
Primary and Secondary Oocyte:
- Primary Oocyte: The basic egg cell that is not yet mature enough for ovulation.
- Secondary Oocyte: More mature than the primary oocyte and ready for fertilization.
Meiosis and Fertilization:
- Oocyte undergoes meiosis; most of it is completed before fertilization occurs.
- If fertilization does not happen, the body initiates the process of flushing out the follicle and regenerating new, healthy cells.
Ovarian Cycle and Menstrual Cycle
- Menstrual Phase: The endometrium (uterine lining) is shed, and the follicle starts rebuilding.
- Ovulation: A short phase where the mature follicle releases the egg into the uterus after recognizing no fertilization has occurred.
- Hormonal Regulation:
- FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Increases at the start of the cycle to encourage follicle and egg development.
- LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Peaks just before ovulation due to estrogen feedback from the developing follicles, stimulating the release of the egg.
Hormonal Interactions
Estrogen's Role:
- Establishes the uterine lining while signaling the hypothalamus to stimulate LH production prior to ovulation.
- Initially, estrogen levels rise steadily, and then cause a peak just before ovulation.
Menstrual Irregularities:
- Factors such as insufficient FSH, stress, exercise, and nutrition can impact regularity, affecting the entire reproductive cycle.
Comparison with Male Reproductive System
Similarities: Both male and female reproductive systems regulate hormonal cycles but are more complex in females due to the process of ovulation and menstruation.
Proliferative Phase:
- Hormones (particularly LH) rise as the body prepares for the next cycle of ovulation.
- Estrogen and progesterone levels stabilize during certain phases to maintain the cycle.
