Types of Sentences

There are four main types of sentences:

  • Imperative

  • Declarative

  • Interrogative

  • Exclamatory

Imperative Sentences

  • Definition: An imperative sentence is a command. It tells you what to do.

  • Punctuation: They always end with a period (.

  • Examples:

    • Go find your toothbrush.

    • Finish your homework.

    • Please do the dishes.

    • Don't eat my pumpkin!

Declarative Sentences

  • Definition: A declarative sentence is a statement. It can convey a fact or simply provide information.

  • Punctuation: They always end with a period (.

  • Examples:

    • Whales are not a kind of tree.

    • Pressley is in 8th grade.

    • I like flowers.

    • Once upon a time, there was a girl with magic hair.

Interrogative Sentences

  • Definition: An interrogative sentence is a question.

  • Punctuation: They always end with a question mark (?).

  • Examples:

    • What time is math class?

    • Where do I go to find a job?

    • Are we supposed to be doing this right now?

Exclamatory Sentences

  • Definition: An exclamatory sentence is a bold statement, expressing strong emotion or excitement.

  • Punctuation: They typically end with an exclamation mark (!).

  • Examples:

    • Wow, that's a giant spider!

    • Run away from that spider!

    • The spider is still chasing me!

Practice: Identify the Sentence Type

  • "Do some laundry when you get home please."

    • Type: Imperative (It's a command/request)

  • "Why don't we just have a maid?"

    • Type: Interrogative (It's a question)

  • "Run and get out of the house because it's on fire!"

    • Type: Exclamatory (Strong command/statement with urgency)

  • "Where can I buy spider repellent?"

    • Type: Interrogative (It's a question)

  • "Cats eat spiders."

    • Type: Declarative (It's a statement of fact)

  • "I am so excited to go to Disney World!"

    • Type: Exclamatory (Strong statement of excitement)

  • "I can't wait to find out my electives!"

    • Type: Exclamatory (Strong statement of anticipation)

  • "What classes are you taking?"

    • Type: Interrogative (It's a question)

  • "Go!"

    • Type: Imperative (It's a command)

  • "There are lots and lots of books in the library."

    • Type: Declarative (It's a statement of fact)

  • "Come over to my house and eat ice cream."

    • Type: Imperative (It's a command/invitation)

  • "We should go eat ice cream later."

    • Type: Declarative (It's a statement/suggestion)

  • "Do you love ice cream as much as I do?"

    • Type: Interrogative (It's a question)
