Overview of the Layers of the Skin
The skin consists of three primary layers:
Epidermis: Most superficial layer.
Dermis: Located beneath the epidermis.
Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Fat Layer): Deepest layer containing adipose tissue.
Epidermis
Composition: Made of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Keratinized: Contains the protein keratin from keratinocytes.
Stratified: Has multiple layers; Squamous: Flat cells.
Layers of the Epidermis (from deep to superficial):
Stratum Basale: Deepest layer where cells divide.
Stratum Spinosum: Provides strength and flexibility.
Stratum Granulosum: Contains granules that contribute to waterproofing.
Stratum Lucidum: Present only in thick skin (palms/soles).
Stratum Corneum: Most superficial layer, consisting of dead cells.
Thickness of Skin Types:
Thin Skin: Typically 1-3 mm thick; comprises four layers (lacks stratum lucidum).
Thick Skin: Typically 4-5 mm thick; comprises five layers and is found in areas exposed to abrasion (palms/soles).
Cell Types in the Epidermis
Keratinocytes:
Predominant cell type (all layers except stratum basale).
Produce keratin, a fibrous protein contributing to hardness and water resistance of skin, hair, and nails.
Dermis
Composition: Contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
Layers of the Dermis:
Papillary Layer: Most superficial layer of the dermis.
Projects into the stratum basale forming dermal papillae (finger-like projections).
Contains:
Fibroblasts: Cells that produce collagen.
Adipocytes: Fat cells; small number present.
Capillaries: Small blood vessels for nutrient exchange.
Phagocytes: Immune cells fighting infections.
Lymphatic Capillaries: Return fluid to bloodstream.
Nerve fibers: Including Meissner's corpuscles for light touch.
Reticular Layer: Deeper and thicker layer of the dermis.
Its net-like appearance is due to a dense network of collagen and elastin fibers.
Contains:
Extensive blood vessels and innervation (sensory and sympathetic).
Provides structural support, elasticity (elastin fibers), and tensile strength (collagen fibers).
Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Layer)
Connection: Connects skin to underlying fascia (fibrous tissue of bones/muscles).
Composition: Blood vessels, loose areolar connective tissue, adipose tissue.
Function:
Serves as fat storage.
Provides insulation and cushioning for the integument.
Pigmentation
Definition: Refers to skin color influenced by several pigments:
Melanin: Provides pigmentation, produced by melanocytes in stratum basale.
Keratin: Found in keratinocytes, contributing to skin's color.
Hemoglobin: Found in blood vessels, influencing skin color.
Mechanism:
Melanin is transferred into keratinocytes via vesicles called melanosomes.
Sun exposure stimulates melanocytes to increase melanin production, leading to tanning.
Effects of Excess Sun Exposure:
Can lead to skin damage, including wrinkling and DNA damage, increasing skin cancer risk (especially melanoma).
Freckles and Moles:
Irregular accumulation of melanocytes can lead to freckles and moles.
Most moles are benign but should be monitored for changes indicating potential malignancy.
