evaluation thus far

  1. explain 3 ways in which the uk supreme court can have an impact on government.

    • can rule on cases brought to it and rulings are superior to the government’s eg rwanda

    • judicial review - govt’s rights

    • right of state v right on individual

    • can redefine definitions of laws/set precedents

    • sort out grey areas of new laws, clear up discrepancies

    • allow citizens to challenge govt decisions, uphold democracy

    • judicial independence: allows court to challenge govt freely, essential facet of the rule of law

  2. evaluate the view that the uk supreme court’s influence over the executive is very limited.

    • govt can modify/create legislation to evade supreme court rulings

    • parliament is sovereign

    • govt is not always bound to abide by its rulings
