NRECA - national emc, represents emcs located in USA, youth tour, headquarters in DC
Touchstone energy cooperatives, national network of electric cooperatives, 46 states, partnerships to help better engage and serve members, source of power and info to 30 million owners
Cobb emc vs georgia power - georgia power = investor owned utility, anybody may become stock holder, profit basis so they can make money, benefit from corporation
Cobb emc = nonprofit, owned by members taht we serve, only customers of cobb emc can own company, applying for electric service and paying membership fee = member of copr, money received other than operating costs/expenses assigned back to members of cobb emc, called capital credits, no income or profit taxes because non et income or profit
Cobb emc called emc and not remc because remc = rural electric membership corp, but is not rural anymore, name change in 1976
Cobb emc = 390 people employed, serves 200,000, 9,505 miles of line, 219000 meters served, one of the largest of ga’s 41 emcs, nations more than 900 emcs, emcs in ga = 4.4 million membres

Washington youth tour: created by comments from lydnon b johnson, addressed 1957 nreca meeting in chicago, texas electric corp sent ppl to dc to work in his office, caught on and 1964 = nreca coordinated program, all expenses paid week long event, 1400 students from across the country
Youth tour objectives:
-to educate youth on rural electrification to promote value of rural electric coops
-opportunity to visit gov buildings to get used to political environment of capital
-meet elected officials
-develop leaders through training and communication

Heating tips:
-open drapes to allow sun in day, keep closed in night to reduce conduction of heat/inflitration
-keep damper closed when no fire in fireplace
-electric heat pumps good
-68 degrees in winter thermostat
Cooling tips:
-trees/shrubs/awnings reduce air conditioning costs
-drapes closed to block sun
-high efficiency units for air conditioners, check seer (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), standard measurement to determine air conditioning efficiency, yellow label, higher seer = more efficient
-set thermostat at 78 during summer
Water heating:
-use timer
-avoid letting hot water run constantly
-quick shower = less hot water than tub baths but hot showers of more than 5 min = uses more
-water heater + all hot water pipes = insulated to conserve energy
-check faucets for leaks esp hot water
Lighting:
-natural lighting good
-keep bulbs and fixtures clean, dust absorbs light by 50%
-one large bulb better than several smaller even tho total wattage is same
-three way switches+ solid state dimmers = various lighting levels
-photo electric controls on outdoor lighting, operate automatically at dusk
-flouresecent lamp blubs - 2 to 4x as much light as incandescent, lasts 25x longer
-mid 1920s, oleg losev created first LED (light emitting diode), 1927 findings published
-LED = very energy efficient, lasts 25x more than incandescent lighting, more durable (made from epoxy lenses), 75% less energy
Electricity:
-electrons in motions, static and current, power plant by spinning magnet inside coils of water, flow
-small particle = electron, tiny charge, six billion electrons to light 100 watt lightbulb for 1 sec
-current = flow of electrons, amperage is amount of flow, voltage = pressure behind flow
-chemical reactions in body send electric signals
-static electricity = standing still, not enough electrons = + and too many= -, 186,000 miles per sec = electricity traveling time, same as speed of light
-fission = breaking apart of heavy atoms, fusion = joining together of light atoms, energy release, all nuke plants = fission
-solar energy = nuclear fusion in sun, photovoltaic = solar panels, and converts light and heat into electricity
-electricity does not leak out of socks
-current electricity = constant flow, direct current (DC) = one direction, AC = alternating current = both directions, power plants = AC
-GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters) shut power when problems occur, so less shock hazards, do not use aluminum to replace fuse
