the immortal jellyfish
Basic Facts
Scientific name: Turritopsis dohrnii
Size: Very small — about 4–5 mm wide (smaller than a fingernail).
Habitat: Warm, temperate oceans around the world.
Nickname: “Immortal jellyfish” because of its ability to reverse aging.
Unique Ability
Can revert from its adult medusa form back to its polyp (baby stage) through a process called transdifferentiation.
This allows it to essentially “reset” its life cycle and avoid natural death from aging.
Limitations
Not truly invincible — it can still die from:
Predators
Disease
Environmental hazards
Its “immortality” is just a survival trick, not eternal life.
Scientific Importance
Scientists study it to learn:
How cells can change into different types (cellular regeneration).
Possible applications for anti-aging research and regenerative medicine.
Fun Facts
Discovered in the 1880s but its “immortal” abilities weren’t confirmed until the 1990s.
It’s considered one of the few known animals capable of biological immortality.
