Hypothesis

What is a hypothesis

Hypothesis is not a question or an aim- if you put ? at end or they aim to study…= 0 MARKS

A hypothesis is a statement- 1 sentence long

2 hypothesis are written: Experimental (split into directional 1🐈‍⬛ + Non directional 2🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛) + Null (contain word no)

How to write a hypothesis

  1. Study stem looking for a difference or relationship (usually in 1st sentence)

    IF difference: It is an experiment + you’re banned from saying Relationship or correlation

    IF relationship: It is a correlation + banned from saying difference or experiment

    • Make sure to write on paper which one it is

  2. Identify variables

    • Correlation= co-variables

    • Experiment= IV + DV (find them + operationalise them)

    IV= what changes/condition

    DV= What they are testing

    Example: IV= good/bad night sleep + DV= how well rested on scale of 1/10

Example Hypothesis- Students will give a higher rating on the scale of 1-10 of how well they rested they felt when they saw good sleep data compared to poor sleep data

Top Tips

Use wording of stem for operationalised DV

Make sure you check if they ask for Null, Directional or non direction- if not specified pick any

If you are unsure whether to add it on- operationalise it and add it!

Writing a null hypothesis

There will be a difference in (DV) for (Mention both IV condition)

Why do a correlation instead of experiment

If it is unethical or impractical to carry out a lab e.g. unethical to manage peoples sleep
