Jason Deception
Jason, forgive me for all the things I said. You and I have shared many happy times together. So, I ask you to overlook my violent outburst. I have been thinking things over. In fact, I took myself to task. “You fool!” I said to myself. “Do you have no sense? Why do you attack those who are trying to help you? Why pick a quarrel with the king and with your husband? What he is doing can only help us if he marries a princess and gets royal brothers for our children. What is the matter with you? Why are you still angry? After all, the gods are providing for you. You have the children to think of. You are already an exile from your own country. You need all the friends you can get.”
When I thought the matter through this way, I came to realize how blind I’d been and how foolish my resentment. And so, I wanted to thank you. I think you were very wise to form this alliance. I was the fool. I ought to have helped you with your plans. In fact, I should have prepared the very marriage bed and been of service to the new bride. But I am what I am, a woman. I will leave it at that. So, Jason, be a man, and don’t sink to a woman’s pettiness. You needn’t copy my mistakes. I beg your pardon. I admit that I was wrong. But now, as you see, I have changed for the better.
Children! Children! Come outside to see your father! There! Embrace your father. Talk to him as I am doing and tell him we are friends again. We’re not angry anymore. There now! Hold him by the hand.
Oh, but I am afraid of what the future holds. My children, will you stretch your arms out like that for all eternity? My heart is racked with grief. I cannot hold back the tears. I have made my peace with your father, and now I have wet this sweet face with my tears.
