Chapter 2 healthcare statistics
Fraction: a piece of a whole ex: 1/4 1/5 and 1/6
Numerator: the top number in a fraction
Denominator: the bottom number in a fraction
Whole Number: The part of the number to the left of the decimal ex: 5 is a whole number
Quotient: The number obtained after dividing the numerator by the denominator. Ex: dividing 3/4 gives you the quotient of 0.75. Quotient can be expressed with a decimal
Decimal: The answer obtained from the quotient. The denominator must have a multiple of 10. Decimal will be shown with a “.” in the answer
Rounding: When you try to get as close to the next whole number as possible so it can be applied to the answer or equation.
Percentage: Expressed with “%” in the answer. An example is 15% of 100. It is a piece of the whole that is expressed as a ratio.
Ratio: When you divide one portion by another of a number. Ratio can be expressed in a percentage, proportion and rate. Ex: a 1:2 ratio
Average: AKA the mean is used in statistics by adding a specific set of numbers and then dividing by the amount of numbers in that set to obtain a value
