Diffusion:
  • Equilibrium - when there is an even distribution of solute molecules in the solvent   * Solute - The molecule being dissolved   * Solvent - The liquid or gas doing the dissolving
There are 2 main types of diffusion:
  • Simple   * Molecules moving from an area of high concentration     * Random motion drives diffusion     * Movement is based on kinetic energy(speed), charge, and mass of molecules
  • Facilitated
Concentration Gradient:
  • Concentration is the measurement of how many particles are dissolved in the liquid   * High concentration = more particles   * Low concentration = fewer particles
Passive Transport:
  • Diffusion across the membrane   * Movement of particles from high → low concentrations     * They must be relative to each other
