Diffusion:
- Equilibrium - when there is an even distribution of solute molecules in the solvent * Solute - The molecule being dissolved * Solvent - The liquid or gas doing the dissolving
There are 2 main types of diffusion:
- Simple * Molecules moving from an area of high concentration * Random motion drives diffusion * Movement is based on kinetic energy(speed), charge, and mass of molecules
- Facilitated
Concentration Gradient:
- Concentration is the measurement of how many particles are dissolved in the liquid * High concentration = more particles * Low concentration = fewer particles
Passive Transport:
- Diffusion across the membrane * Movement of particles from high → low concentrations * They must be relative to each other
