Day 1: 

Geography: 

  • India is surrounded by mountains and oceans as well as the best rivers

  • India is completely isolated due to their geography

  • India's riverways are the most productive in the world leading to the best farmland and rivers

  • Monsoons are very present in Asia leading to large amounts of rain 

  • The Indus River valley is one of the oldest civilizations ever providing good land and there is no evidence of weapons here 

  • Egypt, the Indus River Valley, and Sumaria are amongst the oldest civilizations 

Because of India's good farmland, they have 20-25% of the world's population 

  • India's population has always been at least ¼ of the world's population 

  • Harappa and Mohenjo Daro are among the Indus River Valley Civilizations. The Great Bath is also located here. Scholars estimate that there were no hierarchies here during this time but they have thought that it may have been democratic due to everyone having the same size houses (everyone equal) 

Religion: 

  • Hinduism evolved out of the Indus River Valley because they are obsessed with water

  • It is the oldest widely practiced religion in the world and there are about 1 million Hindus in the world (almost all of which are in India) where there are many Gods but they all are made up of 1 thing (Braman) 

  • Buddhism also started in India which is a branch out of Hinduism 

  • Karma is if you do good things in this life you will be reincarnated to a high life in your next life but if you do bad things you will be given a lower life  

  • Siddhartha Gautama was the first Buddha 

  • Stop desiring to reach the eightfold path 

  • All life is suffering until you stop your cravings 

  • Dali Lama is the ruler of Tibet that China invaded 

  • In early history, people invaded India which started the Caste System. All of the people that they conquer become untouchables and then they begin to organize society in a way where people are assigned certain levels of importance that do not interact with those amongst the other levels  Priests, warriors, farmers, laborers, untouchables are the order 

Day 2: 

Muslim Invasion: 

  • Muslim Mongolian people run the Mughal Empire 

  • Islam becomes very religiously diverse after the Muslim Invasion 

  • Mughals build the Taj Mahal

  • Today India doesn’t want to be associated with the Mughals 

  • Pakistan is regarded as a Muslim country and India is viewed as a Hindu country 

  • At the end of the Mughal period, the Mughals were weak, and that's when Europeans showed up 

Colonization: 

  • The Portuguese are the first Europeans to find India. Vasco da Gama is the leader who led his country to become one of the most powerful countries in the world 

  • People came to look for spices which were worth more than gold at the time 

  • Because of this spice trade, Europeans become very powerful

  • This exponential growth makes it so Portugal is dominating and has one of the largest navies in the world 

  • Portuguese started colonizing but the English ended it 

Day 3: 

British: 

  • The British Government doesn’t start colonizing, the British companies start colonizing to try and make as much money as possible in the least amount of time 

  • The British East India Company is so dominant in the world that 50% of international trade goes through them 

  • The Jewel of the crown is where they make all their money 

  • The British Raj was the British government when they got involved in India

  • Sepoy Mutiny was a large-scale rebellion that spread through certain areas occupied by the British East India Co  

  • Following the rebellion, the British Government gets involved leading to British-run regimens 

  • Lord Curson is the first official British governor 

  • Home Rule Movement: giving a country a certain amount of local power

  • Home Rule League is a group of Indian Nationalists that tried to achieve self-rule. They used peaceful means and tried to sway public opinion in favor of Home Rule 

Gandhi: 

  • He tries to break the caste system with boycotts, protests, and fasting 

  • He gets arrested after a peaceful protest 

  • The Salt March is what made Gandhi famous 

Day 4:

Salt March:

  •  People couldn’t have salt, so they started making their own 

  • Gandhi then started the salt march so countries around the world would see what India was doing to its people 

  • Autonomy of the provinces, direct elections, and assemblies come about after the Salt March

World War II:

  • Millions of Muslims fought for the British 

  • Quit India was when people were peacefully doing nothing, but the Muslims were still fighting for them. This leads the British to help them out later 

  • 3 million people died due to starvation in India in 1943. Winston Churchill became hated by the Indians because he would not give them food even though they had it available. Churchill then became loved by the British because by doing this he was on their side and helping them.

Cripps Mission: 

  • Make India like Canada 

  • Promised to have elections and full self-government once the war was over 

Indian Independence Movement:

  • The movement to free India from British rule

  • Pakistan is now formed leading to the Majority of Muslims moving there. This creates a divide in religion and hatred between India and Pakistan 

Partition of India: 

  • The splitting of India into Pakistan and India 

  • As a result a million people die of the migration ways of people going to Pakistan or people going to India

  • Kashmir is ground zero for conflict between India and Pakistan (they never figured out who to give it to) 

  • Kashmir is northern India/Northern Pakistan

  • The main prince who lives in Kashmir is Hindu so the people of India thinks they should take over Kashmir 

  • Both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers 

Nehru:

  • First prime minister of India 

  • Nehru shapes what India becomes 

  • Makes the Caste system against the law 

  • Embraces women in the work world and grant them freedom 

  • India becomes modernized and the government takes over power, fossil fuels, and other sectors 

  • Nehru is the reason why India becomes a modern country 

Indira Gandhi: 

  • Most beloved prime minister of India 

  • Nehru's daughter 

  • Leader during the cold war 

  • Becomes famous for dividing Pakistan
