The Necessity of the Atonement

• The infinite and eternal atonement is required because:

  • We are all sinners.

  • We fall short of the glory of God.

  • We need a Savior.

The Phrase 'Apply the Atonement'

• The phrase "apply the atonement" is not scriptural.

• The words "apply" and "atonement" do not appear together in the scriptures.

Scriptural Example: Mosiah Chapter 4

• Reference to nearly finding "apply the atonement" in scripture. (Mosiah 4)

• King Benjamin's sermon:

  • King Benjamin is on the tower.

  • He is addressing the Nephite people.

  • He delivers a significant sermon.

• Mosiah chapter three:

  • Contains the longest angelic sermon on record to the Nephites.
