Chapter 1:

Every state has a different drivers manual as they have different regulations and laws.

Must have 3 things with you in the vehicle at all times: drivers license or learner's permit, proof of registration, and proof of liability insurance. (Required in NJ to drive)

  • Contents of the front of a Driver's License:

  • Name: First, Last and middle initial 

  • Date of Birth

  • Address

  • Photo of the person

  • Gender

  • Height 

  • Eye Color

  • License Number (Last initial followed by 14 digits)

  • Class of License (D= Basic, E=Motorcycle, CDL= Commercial Drivers License)

  • Organ Donation 

  • Expiration Date (Expires every 4 years)

Contents of the back of a Driver’s License:

  • Restrictions (Hearing issues, Seeing issues, or disability)

Contents that can change:

  • Address (must go to DMV with documents to prove you changed your address within 1 week) (Out of state: 60 days)

  • Name (2 weeks to change your name (Marriage or Divorce)again with documentation)

Anytime you go to the DMV, you need “6pts of id,” which means you need certain documents that have points that each visit they need to total to 6 points.

  • Primary Documents: 4 points (only allowed 1) (Birth certificate, License, and Passport)

  • Secondary 1 or 2 points (School ID, Bill addressed to you)

  • Social Security Cards

  • Proof of Address

GDL - Graduated Driver Licensing (It's a step by step process to eventually drive by yourself)

  • The program has “3 roads” 

- Early Bird (starts at 16 with your permit, at 17 you get your probationary license, and at 18 you get a basic license)

- Young Adult (Alternative route if you don’t feel comfortable at a driving school)

 Purchase a permit at 17 years old and drive with it for 6 months, then are able to get your probationary license at 17.5 years old. Then at 18.5 years old after 1 year of driving with a probationary license, you’ll get your basic license. (SAME RESTRICTIONS AS EARLY BIRD) (DIFFERENCES IS AGE AND NO 6 HOURS REQUIRED)

- Adult (Starts at age 21)

Why:

  • Some people just don’t want to drive

  • Someone got sick or hurt

  • Went away to college and never got around to doing it.

  • Maybe went to jail

Permit for 3 months and then you get your probationary license that you keep for 1 year. Then after that you get your basic license.



Kyleigh’s Law - refers to the Red Decal on the license plates



  •  This allows officers to identify minors driving to prevent the consequences before anything happens.



Three tests you need to pass:

  • Road Test (Can not fail any part of it)

  • Written or Knowledge Test (80% and higher)

  • Vision Test (20/50 or higher)



When you go for your road test on your 17th birthday, can go to three recommended places:

  • Randolph, NJ

  • Lodi, NJ

  • Wayne, NJ



You are in the car with your supervised driver and will get out of the car and wait for you.



Must need for the Road Test:



  • Permit, Registration, and Insurance

  • Red Decal (One on the front and one on the back)

  • Must have an Emergency brake in the center console of the vehicle



What you need to do to pass the road test: (Practice with permit)



  • Parallel Parking (25ft x 6 ft) (Must back in to the spot) (Must use blinker)

  • Turning (Right or Left) (Must use turn signals) (Hand over hand) (10 and 2 or 9 and 3)

  • Stopping (Full stop)

  • 3 point turn (K turn) (Legal U turn)(3 blinkers for a k turn) (Left right Left)

  • Reverse (Driving Reverse) (ONE HAND) (Left hand on the wheel, right hand on the seat)

  • Curbing (6 inches away from the curb)
