Informational essays are essays where the purpose is to inform, describe, explain, or define the authors subject to the readers

  • Use FACTS to explain to the audience a given topic, issue or question
  • Each informational essay will include a thesis statement
    • Job of the author to explain the thesis to the reader in the body paragraphs

Argumentative

Argumentative essays are essays in which author uses facts to convince the reader of his/her/their view regarding an issue

  • Argumentative writing sometimes involves convincing the reader to perform an action, or it may simply consist of an argument(s) convincing the reader of the writer’s point of view
  • Argumentative essays will use facts and opinions
    • However, this time they are used to persuade/convince the reader that the author is right
  • Argumentative essays also include a type of thesis.
    • The difference is that the thesis of a argumentative essay is called a claim

  • Informative is to explain
    • Inform reader about topic
  • Argumentative is to convince 
    • Proving that you are right and that everyone else is not
    • Making everyone believe and think like you do
