Tides module

Tides

Key Ideas

  • Know how to read a tidal chart/graph
  • What are the three different patterns of tides?
    • diurnal; semidiurnal; mixed semidiurnal - washington has semidiurnal
    • how do you recognize them? Observe changes in water levels and track highs/lows
  • Can you draw the alignment of Sun+Moon+ Earth at the different moon phases?
    • full moon
    • new moon
    • quarter moons
    • How do their positions change the tides?
  • What are spring versus neap tides?

Spring tides are high tidal ranges that happen twice a month

Neap tides are small tidal ranges that happen twice a month

  • Can you use tide predictions from one area to determine tides at another location? no

Vocab

tidal range- Tidal range is the difference in height between high tide and low tide

daily inequality (also called diurnal inequality)- difference in heights of two high or low tides that occur within a single day

diurnal- when there is only one high and low tide in a day

semidiurnal- two high and low tides in a day

mixed semidiurnal-two high and low tides in a day but difference in height between them

spring tides- Spring tides are high tidal ranges that happen twice a month

neap tides-Neap tides are small tidal ranges that happen twice a month
