English Exam June
Unit 3: there is safety in numbers
For 1 and 3, see flashcards :)
4 carbon footprint
A footprint is a measurement of everything we consume and use, including the energy to power our homes. It is our total impact on planet earth.
The UAE (United Arab Emirates) is the country discussed in the video.
households alone are responsible for more than half of the footmprint in this country. If everyone would live like they do, we would need 4.5 planet earths. And we only have one. We are depleting its resources way too quickly, we cant keep living like this.
Every single thing we do has its impact on the planet, but we dont always directly see that impact. For example: buying products that arent local make it hard to realise what the impact of that product is on the planet.
Some products have major impact and can cause naétural disasters over little time. This is why we need to to stop, think about our actions and apopt new habits that are eco-friendly. For example:
- sustainable and local products instead of imported products that only harm the environment.
- Public transport is also way better than using your car all the time. Or what about going by foot or by bike?
- Being concious about what youâre buying and what part of it youâll probably throw away is also a really good thing to reflect on. Maybe buying less will help you do your part to save our planet.
other pieces of advice:
- maintain a stable speed while driving your car
- keep your tyres properly inflated
- donât accelarate too quickly or sharply
- carpooling is also a very good way of being more eco-friendly
- donât put your washing machine on until the machine is full. It costs a lot of money and wastes a lot of water
- Donât use the dryer if itâs warm enough outside to hang your clothes up to dry
- donât leave the lights on if its not necesary

5 The ocean clean up
problem: plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems
initiative: clean up almost half of the pacific gerbage patch in ten years using a network of floating barriers above the passing current. Neutrally buoyant sealife will just foillow the current, but the buoyant plastic remains in front of it. There are no nets, so no animal will get entangled in it. The plastic that is caught can be turned into oil using a process called pyrolysis or turned into useful applications
practical arrangement: it went viral and the founders got so lany emails of people who wanted to help, enabling them to start an investigating team for the feasability of the concept. More experienced people were also convinced to help with research. theyâre going to a second fase, which is a test phase to get towards a large-scale and operational pilot, the final preparation before the project can be executed in full.
6 what is your number
A mathematical poem is a poem in which they talk about math and make a pun about it or a joke.
- vocabulary: the words from 6.3 are self explanatory, so only these two are new
| a score | 20 |
|---|---|
| a gross | total or whole amount of something |
- We learn math for calculation, application and inspiration
- criticism at mathematics learned in school: not effectively motivated
- Fibonacci numbers: a series of numbers in which each number consists of the 2 proceeding numbers
- we see it a lot in nature: for axample the amount of petals on a floower or the amount of spirals on a sunflower
- You can do a lot of mathematical calculations on the Fibonacci numbers to make more patterns, so the series of numbers is actually a big playground for people who love mathematics.
- Itâs also related to the golden ratio: if you take any two Fibonacci numbers that are next to each other and divide the bigger with the smaller number, the bigger the numbers you get closer to the golen ratio, which is 1.68
- a to b is the same proportion as b to a+b, why we donât know, we just accept and go

In this painting we find the golden ratio. The gap between the fingers of God and Adam is in exact accordance with the golden ratio.
The golden ratio is also found anywhere in nature, for example the proportion of your hand to your forearm as well as the distance between your knuckles and marks on each finger.
Research states that Michelangelo intentionally used the golen ratio on the painting above.

\ credit crunch:
Banks were doing well, had more money than customers needed. Low risk = low interest rates. Banks searched new market to lend to and found the sub prime market (unreliable borrowers). They borrowed money and bought houses, the banks took their debt. The house market collepsed and their mortgage (hypotheek) = banks lose money, risk rises = high interest rates, worldwide problem
\ Text prosperity without growth: for a lng time, we thought that the economy needed to grow, that went wrong so now itâs the moment to change
Our perspective doesnât better our people and planet, we find ourselves faced with the imminent end of cheap oil and the degradation of forests, lakes and soils
we are in urgent need of a renewed shared prosperity (gedeelde voorspoed), concept of governance should be renewed
prosperity goes beyond material pleasures, it
- resides in the quality of our lives and in the health and happiness of our families
- is present in the strength of our relationship and out trust in our community
- is evidenced by our satisfaction at work and our sense of shared meaning and purpose
- hangs on our potential to participate fully in the life of society
unit 4: millions of immigrants, one dream
statue of liberty: universal emblem US, located in Pearl Harbor. Itâs the most prominent feature immigrants see when they enter Pearl Harbor. both spiritual and artistic statement of the values of the US and engineering marvel (wonder). No one had ever attempted to build a statue of that size. Gift from Gustav Eiffel. The statue grew in importance. Itâs a welcoming beacon for the immigrants who escaped persecution. It symbolises the ideals of opportunity and the pursuit of happiness. US first and foremost an immigrant nation.
red star line and ellis island:
- before ellis island opened in 1892, 60 million immigrants
- Ellis island immigration station for new arrivels 1892-1924
- Armenian fmaily came to America to escape persecution of christians in Turkey
- cartoon 1898: positive portrayal of the immigration phenomenon. Uncle Samâs face (face of America) made up of different nationalities, suggesting America can absorb all these different groups
- cartoon 1920s: uncle sam as the piped piper leading immigrant rats out of Europe
- cartoon 1909: anti-immigrant cartoon from the Ku Klux Klan, a racist hate group
