Types of data

Primary:

  • collected by the researcher

  • collected from the original source ie/ participants in experiment

Secondary:

  • isn’t collected by the current researcher but by someone else

  • data made available by original researcher

Qualitative vs Quantitative

Quantitative:

  • data can be described numerically/quantitative amounts

→ easier to summarize and interpret information collected

Qualitative data:

  • in form of descriptions, words and meanings

  • characterises experiences as X or Y

  • often collected as written or verbal statements from participants/observation from researcher
