Code Sharing
An agreement within two or more airlines.
An airline buys space on another airline and sells it for the extra space as its own and uses their flight number
Used to increase route network without costs of running a full service
If it has four letters, it’s possible it is a code share
Examples:
YOW ————→ YVR —————> TYO ————> SIN
AC111 AC18 AC829 —> SQ, SIN
↳ code share
Airline and Passenger Benefits
Most airlines have code-sharing partnerships.
Term “code” refers to 2-character IATA designated code and flight number. (example: XX123 operated by airline XX, might also be sold by airline YY as YY456 and by ZZ as ZZ9876
Operating carrier: The airline that actually operates the flight (the one providing the plane, the crew and the ground)
Marketing Carriers/Validating Carriers: Company that sells the ticket but does not operate it.
Examples:
FLIGHT NUMBER ITINERARY AIRLINE
AC 757 TORONTO TO SAN FRANCISCO AIR CANADA
UA 8515 TORONTO TO SAN FRANCISCO AIR CANADA
AC 128 HALIFAX TO TORONTO AIR CANADA
AC 8912 HALIFAX TO TORONTO AIR CANADA JAZZ

First available
Stopover
More than 4 hours
Customers choice
Connection
Less than 4 hours
Airlines choice
Examples:
A customer travelling YMQ-YYC asked her travel agent to arrange her flights so that she had 4.5 hours in YWG to visit with some friends. There are earlier flights available out of Winnipeg on the same carrier that she could have taken. Connection or Stopover? Stopover
A customer travelling YVR-LAS with a connection in SFO must wait for 5 hours in SFO for the connecting flight. There are earlier flights departing from SFO, but they are all full. Connection or Stopover? Stopover
A customer travelling from PHX-YYC with a connection in DEN departed from PHX on a flight that arrived in DEN at 2300. The next flight leaving from DEN-YYC was only at 0700 the next morning. The customer was forced to overnight in DEN. Connection or Stopover? Connection
A customer travelling from YTO to HNL with a connection in YVR had 3 hours and 50 minutes to make the connection in YVR. This time was within the Minimum Connecting Time required in YVR. However, because of a delay in YTO the flight arrived into YVR too late to make the connection. The customer now has an 8 hour wait for the next flight departing YVR to HNL. Connection or Stopover? Connection
