Equilibrium Constant (K)

  • If K>1 the concentration of the products is greater than the concentration of the reactants at equilibrium

  • If K<1 the concentration of the reactants is greater than the concentration of products at equilibrium

  • If K=1 the equilibrium lies in the middle, favouring neither products or reactants

ICE

  • Initial moles

  • Change in moles

  • Equilibrium moles

Kp constant

  • Measured only in gaseous state for gaseous equilibria

  • Pressure is measured in Pascals (as is partial pressure) - unless specified as atmospheres

  • Kp = (partial pressure of product A x partial pressure of product B) / partial pressure of reactants:

    • the number of moles is put as to the power of the partial pressure of that substance - shown by the equation above

Partial pressure = (moles of specific substance / total moles) x total pressure
