Alkyne (triple bond) - side groups, amount of carbons, where triple bond is, suffix

Cyclic hydrocarbons - root, suffix, prefix

  • multiple bonds labeled 1 & 2, side groups lowest combo

  • cyclo

Aromatic - root and suffix

  • derived from benzene

  • more than 6 carbons = phenyl side group

Hydrocarbon derivatives

Alcohol: R - OH

  • ol

Haloalkane: R - Hal

  • varies with halogen

Aldehyde: O

           R - C - H 

  • formyl group

  • al

  • on outside

Ketone: O

        R - C - R

  • one

  • carbonyl group
