Fossils

Fossils are the preserved remains of a decomposed object or living thing. They help scientists to look into the past and study our earth before we were alive. They are also abundant and accessible and provide energy. Scientists who study fossils are called Paleontologists.

There are different types of fossils including:

  • Trace Fossils e.g. burrows, borings, footprints
  • Mould Fossils: fossils formed when a plant or animal dies and then is covered by sediment leaving a bump in the ground. A rock that has an impression (hollow) of an organism
  • Cast fossils: formed after mould fossils, a rock with the shape of an organism protruding (sticking out) from it
  • True Form Fossils: formed due to certification e.g. limb, torsos and heads.
