Classification and Histology of Epithelial Tissues
Epithelial tissues line body surfaces, cavities, and glands throughout the human body. They are divided into simple epithelia (consisting of a single layer of cells) and stratified epithelia (consisting of multiple layers of cells).
Simple Epithelia
Simple epithelia consist of a single layer of cells overlying a basement membrane and connective tissue. These tissues are adapted for diffusion, absorption, secretion, and friction reduction.
Simple Squamous Epithelium

Anatomical Locations:
Mesothelia: Lining the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal cavities.
Endothelia: Lining the heart and blood vessels.
Kidney Tubules: Portions of kidney tubules, specifically thin sections of nephron loops.
Eyes: Inner lining of the cornea.
Lungs: Alveoli of the lungs.
Major Functions:
Reduces friction.
Controls blood vessel permeability.
Performs absorption and secretion.

Key structural components include cytoplasm, centrally located nuclei, and underlying connective tissue.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Ducts.
Portions of kidney tubules.
Thyroid gland.
Major Functions:
Provides limited protection.

Simple Columnar Epithelium

Composed of tall, column-like cells.

Distinct cytoplasm and oval elongated nuclei aligned near the basal region.

Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium

Anatomical Locations:
Lining of nasal cavity.
Lining of trachea.
Lining of bronchi.
Portions of male reproductive tract.
Major Functions:
Protection.
Secretion.
Moves mucus across the surface via ciliary action.
Histological Features & Micrograph Details:
Appears stratified because cell nuclei are positioned at varying heights, but every cell remains in contact with the basement membrane.
Apical surface features prominent hair-like cilia projections.
Anchored to a basement membrane resting on loose connective tissue.

Stratified Epithelia
Stratified epithelia consist of multiple layers of cells stacked upon one another, providing enhanced mechanical and chemical protection or elastic stretch capabilities.

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Surface of skin.
Lining of mouth.
Lining of throat.
Lining of esophagus.
Lining of rectum.
Lining of anus.
Lining of vagina.
Major Functions:
Provides physical protection against mechanical abrasion.
Protects against pathogen entry.
Protects against chemical attack.

Multilayered structure with flattened, squamous superficial cells at the outer surface.
Basal layer contains active stem cells along the basement membrane that continually divide to replace lost superficial cells.

Transitional Epithelium
Anatomical Locations:
Urinary bladder.
Renal pelvis.
Ureters.
Major Functions:
Permits expansion and recoil after stretching without damage to the tissue layer.

Characterized by dynamic appearance; when relaxed, cells appear rounded and plump.
Attached to a basement membrane supported by deep layers of connective tissue and smooth muscle layers.
Representative Example: Empty bladder (relaxed epithelium).
