Crop plants

Use of Polyethene tunnels/glasshouses to increase yield

Polyethene tunnels - protect crops from the %%weather%% (wind/rain/temperature) and pests

Glasshouses - Glass windows/walls let light pass through for photosynthesis which protects them from %%wind%%

Lamps providing light 24 hour a day - increases %%light intensity%% --> increases photosynthesis

Red/blue lighting - plants absorb this %%wavelength%% the most --> increases photosynthesis

Oil burners - increase the %%CO2 i%%n the atmosphere - CO2 is needed for photosynthesis which is needed to provide energy for growth

Hydroponics - growing plants in nutrient solutions instead of water) plants can uptake minerals more easily

Use of fertilisers to increase yield

NPK fertilisers - increase the amount of %%nutrients%% needed by plants to grow well, making crops grow larger and faster, which increases yields

Why must fertilisers be water soluble? So plants can absorb them through their roots by (osmosis or something else?)

NPK fertilisers provide:

  • Nitrogen - helps make %%amino acids%% for proteins --> growth
  • Phosphates - needed to make %%DNA and cell membranes%% --> respiration
  • Potassium - needed in the production of enzymes --> for respiration + photosynthesis
