What are the operations for Whole numbers?

Operations are ways we work with numbers to find answers. The main operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

1.)Addition (+)

  • Purpose: To combine numbers and find the total

Example: 245 + 378 = 623

Steps:

  • Line up the numbers by place value

  • Add from right to left

  • Carry over if needed

2.)Subtraction (–)

Purpose: To find the difference between numbers

Example: 512 – 267 = 245

Steps:

  • Line up the numbers by place value

  • Subtract from right to left

  • Borrow if needed

3.)Multiplication (×)

Purpose: To find the total of equal groups

Example: 46 × 3 = 138

Steps:

Multiply from right to left.

Carry over if needed.

Add the results for multi-digit multiplication.

4.)Division (÷)

Purpose: To split a number into equal parts or groups.Example: 144 ÷ 12 = 12Steps:

See how many times the divisor fits into the dividend.

Subtract the result.

Bring down the next digit and repeat until done.
