Supranationalism and Devolution Reading

1)      In your own words; describe a “borderland”

Lines are drawn to separate national laws filled with people and goods around a territorial border.

The areas or where countries meet.

2)      Define the following:

a.       Supranationalism

Uprising of political, economic, cultural, and military establishments. Countries pretty much working together to obtain those things and borders.

Countries come together to share boundaries

UN is based in New York so USA would be apart of it

NAFTA – North America Free Agreement – Bwtn USA, Canada, and Mexico. Prevents tariffs, to make for Canadian or Mexican things more expensive

b.       League of Nations

An international organization to prevent aggression. Predecessor to the UN. Failed bc the USA or Soviet Union didn’t join

c.       International Court of Justice

Created the first international negotiations specifically the law of the sea. UN vers of courts

d.       Dayton Accords

The diplomatic intervention of the US in 1995 in which created the revised version map of Bosnia. Tried to protect and bring peace to Yugoslavia

e.       UNPO

The Unpresented Nations and Peoples Organization is the voices of oppressed groups of people in different countries like the Tibetans under China’s rule.

f.        Frontier

The area where borders are shifting and contain different cultures or nationalities that claim to be the same area. Mostly environmental things like mountain ranges and oceans.

g.       Truman Proclamation

Reconfirmed that high seas above the continental shelf will remain open. Connects to the Law of the Sea

h.       Multinational Unions

International cooperation that further their political ideologies, economic plans, military, culture, and strategic goals.

i.         EU and Benelux

The EU is the European Union that began out of the Benelux, they pretty much control and manage the things happening around Europe economically and more. Benelux is a trade union formed in Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

j.         OPEC

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries produces and export oil internationally.

k.       African Union

A cultural alliance not only in Africa but with the Arab League, Muslim states in North Africa and South Asia. Multinational unions

l.         Ethnonationalism (examples?)

Canadian province of Quebec. The French speaking community is a devolutionary force that challenges Canadians stability. Other examples are the Basque of n. Spain and Catalonia. A form of nationalism based on someone’s ethnicities

m.     Gateway states

Border zones between geopolitical power that create and gain different cultures and traditions. St Louis, to gateway arc it represents the split bwtn the east and west. NY is the most famous gateway city.

n.       CIS/Near Abroad

The Commonwealth of Independent States is a supranational entity created to replace the old Soviet framework with newly democratic Russia (attempt that did not work).

o.       Globalization

The expansion of economic, political, and cultural activities to a global scale. This provides the states of the world.
