1. History of Soccer Soccer, also known as “football" in most countries, is one of the oldest and
most popular sports in the world. The modern game originated in England in the 19th century,
but variations of the sport have been played for centuries in different cultures. In 1863, the
Football Association in England established standardized rules, leading to the development of
the game as it is known today. Soccer has since grown into a global phenomenon, with major
tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League.
2. Basic Rules of Soccer
● Objective: The goal of soccer is to score more goals than the opposing team within the
allotted time.
● Team Composition: Each team consists of 11 players, including a goalkeeper.
● Game Duration: A standard match consists of two 45-minute halves, with a halftime
break in between. Extra time and penalty shootouts may be used in knockout rounds.
● Field Dimensions: The field is rectangular, with a goal at each end.
● Offside Rule: A player is in an offside position if they are nearer to the opponent's goal
line than both the ball and the second-last defender (goalie is typically the last defender)
when receiving a pass.
● Fouls and Misconduct: Physical contact such as tripping, pushing, or handball (except
by the goalkeeper within their penalty area) results in free kicks or penalties. Yellow and
red cards are used to discipline players.
● Restarts: The game resumes with kick-offs, throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, or free
kicks depending on how the ball exits play.
3. Strategy and Skills
● Basic Skills:
○ Dribbling: Moving the ball while maintaining control.
○ Passing: Transferring the ball accurately to teammates.
○ Shooting: Striking the ball towards the goal to score.
○ Defending: Blocking, tackling, and marking opponents.
